My daughter's best friend from Michigan was supposed to fly down today for her 13th birthday. Her friend's parents are in the middle of a divorce, with the dad just moving out this week. When her mom asked her what she wanted for her birthday, she said for her mom and her to fly down to see us. Well, they have 5 kids - 2 his, 2 hers and 1 theirs, with the youngest 4. Her mom said they all couldn't afford to come but she asked her if she would fly by herself and could we get her from the plane when she landed in Panama City. Well, she was so excited, my daughter excited and we were planning a girl's weekend.
Her mom calls me at noon and says she just got on the plane. I said we'll be waiting at the airport for her. 2 hours later, she calls and say the plane had mechanical difficulties, and the plane never left the ground. She has been waiting in line to find out if she can get a voucher, mother and daughter having meltdowns, no husband to help her, kids needing to be picked up from school etc. They won't let her go on the last flight from Atlanta because she is an unaccompanied minor. I told them just get her to Atlanta, I drive up and get her, but they can't get a flight.
She was just coming for the long weekend and now I have a very disappointed girl on this end as well as the disappointed birthday girl!

Paula, if you read this, maybe after things have calmed down a little, you can give her a call.

Thanks. The good news is they were able to get a refund. I think they would have just left the airport without checking, they were so upset.

Paula, your flight is completely sold out, so no go for that idea. I think they are thinking maybe Easter Break now.

Dang, I just wanted to spoil them this weekend!

:pissed:I hate airports. What a ruin of a birthday!!!! I hope everything works out next time! Sounds like they really need the spoiling.

That's so sad :( I had assumed all was going well. If anything changes, she is more than welcome to fly with us on our flight. We had talked about that earlier, but she had planned to come to SoWal the weekend before we're there. DRAT! And our daughter would have loved to travel with her, too. I'll give her a call to see if there's anyway at this point that she can join us. I can call the airline to see if I have any luck (in case there are cancellations).

Oh my God, that just plain s*cks! I don't know who to feel the worse for:( You know those two need a lot of hugs right now. And I'm sure your daughter is feeling down herself. Let me know when she does get here and if there is anything I can do to help you spoil them. Having a 13 year old daughter myself I know how important that birthday is! That is one of the BIG ones that needs to be be special.

Thanks Tootsie, Ocean Lover, AIT, Paula and KAT!
When you have a teen/preteen so psyched up and those hormones flying everywhere, having something not work out is hard to take! The moms try to reason but not being able to make it happen for them, we are all worn out and emotional.
She will be able to come down another time and we will make it special for them!
Thanks for listening!

Supermom (sounds like you are one for sure!) I'm so sorry about your daughters messed up weekend!!! I have a thirteen year old daughter as well, maybe you can plan it for spring break? what a huge bummer for the friends b-day:(
