Gas Prices - the REAL way to reduce them!

The only real way to make gas prices go down is to reduce how much we use. The problem with the proposed gas ?boycotts? is that since it won?t cut consumption, it will just shift sales from one day to the next and boycotting one station or brand just hurts the station owner (typically a small businessperson) not the big oil companies.

Some say everyone reducing the amount of gas they use by as little as 1% would have the desired effect - this would be about a gallon a month per person. (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18615572).

Unfortunately, many Americans' lifestyle choices have been contrary to the ideas of conservation - low mpg vehicles, long commutes, oversized vehicles etc.

What do you think it will take for Americans to change their driving habits?

Do you think continuing high gas prices will make people rethink their lifestyle choices?

SJ, how long should I make that scarf? :bang:
Do you really need one at the beach? Why do you think that? What alternatives to a scarf can I make for you.

Thank you for your response.

Funny, while you were typing this, I was typing you a message. I would like my scarf somewhere around 6'-7' in length, please.

You are welcome to make alternatives. I'm open, but no doilies please.

 ...I think they have a secret.

I think they're in the wrong thread!

Don't break out your crochet needle yet Mango ... you may win the bet yet (though I will have to side with SJ on this one).

As for gas consumption, I agree with you wholeheartedly scooterbug. I am so committed to stretching my gas purchases as far as possible that I ran out of gas this morning after dropping my son off at school. :bang: Where is the mortification smilie? :yikes:

In all seriousness, scooterbug, not only do we need grass roots efforts nationwide on this front, but we need the kind of leadership that truly wants to help change fuel standards and voices a commitment to reducing consumption -- AND THEN FOLLOWS THROUGH.

Well, there is currently a bill being introduced in the senate that would require passenger cars, pickup trucks, and SUVs to have an average of 35mpg by 2020 (currently it's 25 mpg), and after 2020 they have to improve by 4% a year. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/18491676/

Since the non-hybrid car I bought in 2000 currently meets that standard, I think we should be able to do a heck of a lot better more then that a decade from now!

The fastest way to get things changed is not through legislation, but by behavior - unfortunately people either can't or won't change their behavior.

I have an observation. At the same time of year for the last several years gas prices have sky rocketed. This also happens around the Christmas season, and Spring Break for schools. Now, we have the summer vacation season upon us and the prices have gone up. The price of gas will go down as soon as school starts again, mark my word. I don't think I am as stupid as those that raise the prices think I am. Don't you think these gas companies already have enough money? Greed, plain and simple is all that it is.
