CNN's "Black in America" Series

I'm not racists and I'm sincerely all about equality, but for some reason this series has just rubbed me the wrong way and frankly I'm quite annoyed with CNN and with Soledad O'Brien, the series' reporter. One of the stories that she did, about the three black women who went shopping at a metro Atlanta Old Navy store and were then accused of shoplifting and detained for an hour and a half before the store manager and police realized that it was all a big mistake, was very one-sided. O'Brien simply relied on one account--a letter written to Gap Inc., executives from one of the women involved, as the centerpiece of her story. She did not bother to interview Gwinnett County police and seemed to imply that the police there were tolerant of this alleged case of racial profiling. So, in a counter-attack on CNN this week, Gwinnett County police, crafted a letter of disapproval of the CNN story and offered their factual version of the events that took place and also made it clear that the department did apologize for the incident--which in my opinion should be more on the hands of Gap Inc.,--and as one of Georgia's most populated and diverse counties, does not tolerate racial profiling.

i've really enjoyed this series...i did not see this particular episode.

A black man was being interviewed on TV the other day. He objected to the series because he said that they only featured the more shocking cases -- that black men like him who have good jobs and are good fathers and husbands aren't included in the show because they aren't interesting enough.

I thought people would be speaking out about that aspect too. If anything, this series is hurtful to any group.

Before this thread shreds into an unfortunate compilation of white guilt....can we please hear from some African Americans on this topic??

I will tell you how this thread will end up...too, too many Elizabeth Hasslebecks chimming in, and no Whoopi Goldbergs anywhere in sight.????

Ummm, yeah, we do live in whitebread USA here, not too many Whoopis (or is that Whoopies?) are going to weigh in.

I find it facinating that a show oriented toward exploiting "racial tension" shows up on CNN three months before the first presidential election involving a liberal african american candidate takes place.:roll::roll:
