CNN's "Black in America" Series

New posts
Geo, to be a "token" you really need to be
a) not a man

b) not a white man

:floor:

Cute...

When I said I have been the "token Whoopi" lately I was talking about my ideology- not my gender or skin color, sillys...

I would have said I have been your token liberal but too many would have misunderstood the term and assigned a negative connotation...

;-)

Not me bruva, I switched over to the word Progressive, that should work for you as wll, no?:idontno:

I am second runner up token gay here.

I watched the Panama City news for the first time since moving here and what did I see, shootings etc. I guess living here in Seagrove I just don't think along those lines. Oh, and the shooters were African American. I was not surprised. I decided not to watch the news after watching it on consecutive days and getting much of the same on crime. A friend of mine called from the New Orleans area where I am from and congratulated me on moving away.

I've seen some of the series and there were some good aspects of it. It was nice to see the series show successful african americans who were happy and who inspired me with their vision and pursuit of the American dream.

Now... getting back to CNN "Black in America".... I do find it kind of ironic, as well, that this series it coming right before the Election with the first Black candidate from a major party, and, although newsworthy, I am suspect of the timing.....

And when can we expect the following reports? :idontno:

red in America
yellow in America
white in America

I think not.
You'll never see "White in America," and for good reason. Whites have not been oppressed in this country. Maybe in individual circumstances, but nothing at all like the way African Americans have (even through government policies).

I'm right there with you on the ideology.

Just after the Wright scandal Obama gave a marvelous speech on race relations and if I recall one of its premises was that we need to start to look at racial issues honestly and openly. But yet I get the impression from a few of the posts in this thread that folks feel there is some sort of conspiracy going on with the timing of CNN's airing of this segment- like we are being duped or something. I don't get it. We are looking at the first viable African American presidential candidate ever. Doesn't the timing make perfect sense?

But regardless-
I have read that Soledad has been working on this segment for 1.5 years so her timing might actually be rather serendipitous...

I think we just need a black, lesbian, handicapped, blind, deaf, single parent, low income, jewish, immigrant to accurately give a "minority" opinion.
