Violating free speech

New posts
You've overshot the target. You want equality and freedom for all, but in order to get there you feel the need to restricted the rights of those you think you need to reform. I want the same freedoms and equality that you do but I'm not interested in restricting anyone from voicing an opinion. In this sense I'm more respectful of people's freedom and equality than you are my friend. ;-)

I am right on target and you are jumping to conclusions, nowhere on this thread have I stated that this plate should not be issued. I just believe it is in poor taste, offends many, and would say a lot about the person who would display it. Since the state has decided to issue such nonsense and I still want my own ridiculous offensive plate how can you claim I am trying to restrict the freedom of others? All I ask is that I be treated equally.

I have a redneck friend and I used to go over his house and get shoot faced. In typical redneck tradition, to save time and energy, we would pee in the backyard. He also had a confederate flag lying in the dirt next to the storage shed. Guess where we would relieve ourselves?

If the 'heritage not hate' crowd is serious and not utterly lying through their teeth about the whole thing, there's always the Stars & Bars flag instead of the Confederate Battle Flag. It's a perfctly nice flag that lacks the racism and evil of the battle flag, and is actually becoming poplar among people that want a reflection of Confederate history without quite the same baggage. Pensacola went stars & bars a few years back for all its 'City of Five Flags' portrayals.

I have "heritage not hate" friends who display the Bonny Blue Flag (1 white star on blue background) as sort of a "stealth" statement for which mainly "insiders" would know the meaning.

There is no doubt that there was bravery & valor on both sides in the Civil War & in WWII. However, the Southern Cause was so wrapped up w/ slavery & the German Cause w/ anti-Semetism, that we now look askance at those who say they are honoring bravery & valor by displaying the flags of those lost causes.

Re the surrender of R.E. Lee, U.S. Grant said, "“I felt like anything rather than rejoicing at the downfall of a foe who had fought so long and valiantly, and had suffered so much for a cause, though that cause was, I believe, one of the worst for which a people ever fought, and one for which there was the least excuse."

I wonder what Grant's excuse was for owning slaves himself?

Twelve of our presidents owned slaves--eight of them while serving as president.
The only evidence that Grant owned slaves is an 1859 letter freeing one--it seems he had control over slaves his wife inherited.

Thomas Jefferson, who told us that it was self-evident that all men are created equal owned slaves.
The Father of our Country owned slaves.

What a shameful legacy.
