"WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) -- Few observers have ever seen anything like the economic data that will be released in the coming week, with the consumer price index and housing starts each expected to breach records dating back to the late 1940s...."

"This is the time to buy stocks. This is the time to recall the words of the late J. P. Morgan... that any man who is bearish on America will go broke. Within a few days there is likely to be a bear panic rather than a bull panic. Many of the low prices as a result of this hysterical selling are not likely to be reached again in many years."

- R. W. McNeel, market analyst, as quoted in the New York Herald Tribune, October 30, 1929, when the DJIA was about 240 (+,-)

In 1932 the DJIA bottomed @ about 25 (+,_)

I always love the proclamations about what America will always do or what America will always be. America is still in its infancy as countries go. The sampling span of time of 230 years is so short it can't even be considered yet what America will do or be. I put a lot of faith in a financial advisor from Philly when I was young until I realized that all his financial planning was based on a sampling period of 1920 through 1990.

Except that this downturn looks like it may linger too long and claim way too many casualties!

Grow up. Economic down turns are a natural part of economic cycles. You hold your financial future in your own hands.

What an incredibly boorish, crude and insenstive thing to say - and why don't you grow a heart - I couldn't care less that you are telling me to grow up - I am talking about your pathetic comment that everyone holds their financial future in their own hands - I am actually glad you wrote that - it speaks volumes about you and now I can gladly ignore your posts knowing where you come from. Ciao.

Capricious,
Do you ever read James Kuntsler? To many he is a little doom and gloom but he has great insight into the plight of the economy today and basically says that americans are sleepwalking into their future...look him up - you may enjoy him.

Bad Americans. We should have been much more like those enlightened and futuristic folks over in Dubai who only build (with slaves) cool stuff that's good for the environment so that everyone will buy a little piece of heaven on Earth. Uhhhh...... never mind. Maybe Dubai can join Cleveland on the bailout train.

Would anyone care to comment on how much negative/sensationalistic news stories are affecting the stock market and the economy?

Bad news gets better ratings, but the fallout isn't worth it IMO.
