Are you really gonna give up Vodka?

I'm sure people have seen this on the news by now. Is anyone actually offended?

I can't zoom on the picture - is it just the old map or are the "territories" redrawn states?

Strange ad, not planning a boycott or having a cow about it.

It's an Absolut Vodka ad that ran in Mexico and was simply a play on the historical map above. Apparently people have been jamming there phone lines all day saying it is rascist and promotes illegal immigration.

More amused or bemused than offended. Anti-Americanism is so rampant in Europe that companies resort to creative ways to express it, even in advertisements. In apparent defense of the ad, Absolut stated that the ad was targeted to Mexican consumers not those in the US. Apparently, Absolut has never heard of YouTube or the Web...

According to Reuters, a company spokeswoman posted this on the Absolut website, apparently in an attempt to restore calm and credibility:

?Instead, it hearkens to a time which the population of Mexico may feel was more ideal.?

Really?

I suppose this means that when Absolut ads are run in the UK, it will show a map of the UK plus the original thirteen colonies? :funn:

Absolut?s ad is nothing more than arrogant Eurpeans trying to export to Mexico what they believe to be ?European sensibilities?. Hogwash. Appease Mexico at the cost of the US? I believe this boycott will have legs. Drink Stoli?

I'll get upset about this ad when there isn't a since ad or commercial in the US that makes fun of another culture or country.

Fun fact o' the day:

50% of illegal immigrants are those who entered the country legally and then stayed after their visa etc. expired.

So even if we built a new berlin wall along our borders and it was 100% effective, it would only address 50% of the problem.

I think it's a funny ad - it doesn't offend me at all.

Would that ad motivate Mexicans to drink more Absolut?

I think it is stupid based entirely on the fact that they are selling Vodka. I just don't think Mexico is a great market for Vodka. It would be like selling tofu in Texas and showing an old map of Texas
