free speech= you're fired!???

New posts
I don't listen to Imus, I don't like him. I also don't listen to Rap which if you check the lyrics of some of these Rap Artists you will find the same reference to what Imus has said. They repeat it over and over again. Do you see people standing in line trying to get them fired by their record companies. Do you see people in outrage over what they say. NO, you don't. I do not agree with what Imus said. I do not agree nor do I like some of these rap artists berating woman on a daily basis. We do live in a country of free speech. They and he have the right to say what they want whether it right or wrong. I have the right and the ability to turn the channel or turn off the radio. Thank GOD.

I hear what you're saying about rap music, but I really see that as more of a reflection of a segment of american culture. and it captivates me to have a glimpse into this culture. it's like history being written to music. like it or not, much of it is life on the street, or life in the hood, or wherever. some of it is just crap, no doubt. but it is a form of art - whether appreciated by others or not.

Imus, on the other hand, is just being an ass, a bore, and mainly ignorant in his statements. I think his own statements speak to his ignorance. no need to fire him. he is demonstrating his own stupidity. people don't really want to hear someone like that. he has nothing to do with art or anything useful in the world.

I just hate that he's gotten this much media attention. people may just decide to tune in...

Yes to all of the above. Especially the last part. I really felt it was unnecessary for the entire Rutgers team to get up there and defend themselves. They didn't have to! By doing so they just fueled the debate. It is not them vs. Imus, it is his big mouth vs. his career. He is revealing himself; what he said was truly not personal. I am not defending him, mind you, but I would have liked to have seen the Rutgers team prove itself to be above all this nonsense by merely releasing a statement that was ghostwritten by Miss Manners. You know, the kind that makes you say "oh snap!"

But it has all gotten so noisy. He is a moron and should just go away.

If you want to call me a name go ahead, I am secure enough in who I am to not be threatened and I certainly have better things to do than police citizen's words.

Good point. When I was growing up, if you called someone a name which you shouldn't you got your butt kicked, so only people who wanted to fight would resort to such tactics.

The young ladies at Rutgers should be enjoying the success of the season that they have had by making it to the Final Four instead of having to deal with Imus and his hurtful words. As the mother of a female college basketball player I know it takes years of hard work and dedication just to get to play at the college level much less at the top of Division 1 level. Once they make it to the collegiate level they must of course keep up their grades. They say it is like having a full time job and I certainly believe that. Many of the male basketball players hope to use it a stepping stone to the pros but the majority of the women use the opportunity as a way to get a college degree. Some of these young ladies wouldn't have the opportunity to go to college if not for athletics. As for Imus, if he get canned for this, thats OK with me. I just don't know what these girls have done to deserve his vicious words. Sorry, I guess I missed his joke. :pissed:
I agree Gypsea....Imus is a disgusting idiot! I finally listened to his broadcast on AOL and was throughly sickened by him! Loosing his show is too good for him! He should be made to lick the bottoms of the Rutger's players shoes!

:roll:see, it worked. contraversy sells.

I also did not listen to or watch Imus, and Inever heard anyone make any comments about his show that would make me tune in. He obviously was not worth my time.

I am disappointed in how the Rutgers coach is handling this situation. Imus has apologized, his show has been dropped, and he will continue to get press and air time from the whole thing, and probably write a book.

At this point, the best thing the Rutger's coach could do for her team is to get them back to class, studying for exams, away from this media-driven circus. Putting them through a big build-up for a face-to-face showdown with Imus accomplishes nothing but distract the women from the most important part of their academic year. I think the coach could make a better, and classier, statement by walking away, because these girls truly have "better things to do" than listen to some addled person's apology and give him more air time to boot.

what(who)ever the driving force is behind the public outcry, the wave is gaining some serious momentum. NBC has dropped the simulcast nationally, and advertisers are fleeing like rats from a sinking ship. i think his days are numbered and he will be made an example of. as mentioned above, i think it depends who is making the delivery, and what the venue is. people pay big bucks to go to a comedy show and hear the same thing imus said. richard prior said this stuff waaay back, i don't think i heard jesse or al chastising him. prior referred to himself with the "word which will not be uttered" and yet when imus was on al's radio show, al got on his case for referring to himself as a cracker.

it's ridiculous that we need to walk on pins and needles everywhere we go. the whole country is turning into stepford. americans' second hopeful souce of income is the lawsuit. and as mentioned above, anything al and jesse can do to get facetime will be ridden like the well beaten dead horse.

imus is an idiot, and i'm not sure who does listen to him. i expect to see wfan dropping him within a week.

I agree with you, jdarg. It would have been best if the Rutgers coach had just ignored Imus. What a waste of the players time. They definitely have better things to do.

You are so right! Finally someone has the balls to say it! Do people really want to live in a country where everything we say is scrutinized and possibly punished? Our founding fathers must be disgusted on a regular basis with what has been done with our Constitution. If you want to call me a name go ahead, I am secure enough in who I am to not be threatened and I certainly have better things to do than police citizen's words.

Oh we're not going to call you names.......we're just going to scream FIRE! next time you are in a theater and test your theory of unlimited, unpoliced speech.
