Plastic recycling question?

So I religiously check the bottom of the mayonnaise jar, the Nyquil bottle, and every other plastic container for the recycling symbol.

Back when I lived in Memphis, the city would only take items labelled "1" or "2". How about Walton County?

Also, what about plastic caps and lids? They never seem to have a recycling symbol on them. For that matter, what about any plastic item without a recycling symbol?

Yeah, there was a lady on Oprah talking about that a couple weeks ago. I'm curious about those numbers too.

The numbers indicate what kind of plastic was used. My knowledge is a little weak, but I think some of them aren't as readily recyclable as others, so some recycling programs limit which ones they take.
