Resume Honesty

To fudge, or not to fudge. That is the question.

Is it bad to wiggle around a title?

Well, you're in PR. Step back and look objectively -- will this particular spin work or not work?

I almost always would err on the side of total honesty, because these kinds of things can and do bite you in the butt. But if you were an intern doing, say, a lot of assignments given to more experienced people, well ... I guess you can't dodge the fact that you were an intern but you can talk about how your responsibilities were far greater than an average intern's.

In fact I think that is the stronger position. What title or level should someone your age have? Are the responsibilities you have taken on commesurate with someone your age, or with someone a bit older? If the title isn't impressive, but the work you have done while holding it is, well, that's what you need to emphasize. In bold.

Here's the thing. I went from an account exec to a publicity coordinator. Some places a coordinator is pretty low man. I know I'll get in for an interview and once I do it'll all make sense. At least that's what I'm banking on. It's a Senior Publicist/Publicist position.

I think for now I'm going to keep the real title. I just don't want it to come back to me.

Good plan. :clap_1: Good luck with the interview. Will listing your responsibilities of this publicity coordinator job on your resume be of any help?

:clap_1: Good decision my little Kimmi! Think about all those people you hear about in the news that get caught. It just ain't worth it.

I would list the job title given to you by your employer when you were granted that position. The description of job duties on your resume will alert prospective employers as to the responsibilities you shouldered. That and a very good oral presentation by you at interview time will get you where you want to go!

What Mermaid said...ditto! Great advice from everybody. Honesty is key.

I would only add that if there is a "standard" or pro forma resume used in your field, follow the usual "template". If you are up against a large number of co-applicants, you don't want to "tick off" the person who is doing the initial weeding/sorting out due to an unfamiliar or difficult-to-read or follow resume. Expand upon your duties in the appropriate area. As Mermaid said, that will alert prospective employers! I worked in the legal field and once saw a very "creative" resume submitted for an articling position. It was immediately discarded. Lawyers don't want anyone deviating from the usual conservative format...don't know about that in your field though. Maybe creativity is key in your area?!

Keeping my fingers and toes crossed for you!
