I should be trying them on location, but I cannot relax like that. I need tunes, my dogs, and the right state of mind. A long time ago, I use to sit on location around our little home town, and paint watercolors. It is much easier for numerous reasons to draw from a photo. Memory is no good, because we tend to picture things which are not present in reality.

Why is that? I used to do alot of things in pencil and I always did better going from a photo.

I know that I do best drawing from photos because the expression never changes. With live models, even if they try to sit still, subtle things change and it's difficult to get an accurate depiction.....

at least for me. ^_^

What PV said, plus no light/shadow changes in photos, photos define space, depth, and size. Also, it is difficult for me to draw with the paper perpendicular to the ground and in front of me -- much easier on surface parallel to ground. Inside, there is not wind blowing, tree pollens making me sneeze, and I don't have to lug my stuff around, nor risk the drawings getting all smeared in transport. There is the other part about keeping low profile. It is easier to snap a quick photo and not interrupt beach goers, than it is to capture them with a pencil. Waves are especially difficult for me while they are moving. You may think the waves look like scribble at first glance, but they are much more, flowing with the movement of the water.

LL, I draw to help with my deep breathing. There is a large part of my body which naturally wants to tense up when I am drawing, but recognizing this, I push force myself to breathe deeply. It feels rather good like meditation.
