ATLANTA -- State inspectors have temporarily shut down a popular local bakery after inspectors say they found evidence of a rat infestation. The state Department of Agriculture found rodent droppings and filthy conditions at the Basket Bakery in Stone Mountain on James B. Rivers Drive.Officials with the Department of Agriculture said nothing can be baked in the oven until they clean up their act.Pictures taken by agriculture officials showed rodent droppings under a bread rack, beside the flour and in muffin pans filled with green rodent bait."That's unbelievable, totally unbelievable. They have a lot of clientele down there," said resident Tonya Smith. After officials discovered what they called a "rodent infestation," the Department of Agriculture temporarily closed down the bakery. It will not be allowed to re-open until the conditions are corrected. The manager told Channel 2 the problem will be taken care of."I have seen worse, but this is pretty bad," said Micron Pest Management employee Jason Schmidt. "(The droppings) are touching every different food, every different surface, and they're going to every different food that we're consuming and eating."Schmidt went on to say, "Rodents are vectors of disease. They do also carry allergens to some people who have asthma. There's a protein in their urine that can stimulate asthma attacks."The bakery released a statement Friday which stated, "Once in a great while, despite our diligence, we have minor pest problems. This was the case the other day when we were visited by the Department of Agriculture. Since the closing, we have been proactive in solving this problem. We look forward to a visit from the Department of Agriculture next week, when we fully expect to be given a clean inspection."
