MLK Weekend

New posts
I was talking in general about people who discount MLK's ideals and contributions to our nation based on his personal life - they do not know that they are racist, but in many cases they certainly are. in your case, I would say its an absolute. IMO.

I am not saying that Dr King's proposals were all appropriate, but they were a start. we've come a long long way because of his courage to make a difference.

I would say that as an absolute, you are poorly educated and run your mouth about things of which you have absolutely no idea. I listed one of the most respected conservative publications to back me up. You listed your feelings and opinions. If it helps, read Thomas Sowell. He agrees with me. By the way, now that Friedman passed, he's my favorite living, publishing economist. And he's black. So much for the racist thing.

From your publication link 6th generation:

"On many college campuses, MLK Day has replaced Presidents’ Day as a day off in the academic calendar, as if King were more important and more worthy of veneration than Washington and Lincoln put together"

which I find interesting since Lincoln is represented as abolishing slavery in schools, but his actual motives for such were purely economics based, or how vain Washington was when getting his portrait taken, and his use of high heeled boots.

Perhaps our college campuses which now have more minorities who received grants who had the academic abilities, but may not have been accepted , had it not been for MLK's efforts, see a person more worthy of veneration given the choice of Holidays.

Food for thought IMO.

Then take the argument on the merits. First, what are you feelings on Jim Bakker? Second, how do you feel about minorities being discriminated against when it comes to academic admission? By, the way, the minorities I'm speaking of are Asian, not black. At Berkley and Harvard, they are pushing away qualified Asian students based on the color of their skin so they can admit more black and Hispanic students.

Jim Bakker? :idontno: How does he fit into this? Talk about apples and oranges. He contributed zilch to society. He and his wife stole and lied and cheated so many people- financial adultery that ruined many lives. Also, he is hardly held up as anybody that ever actually made a difference in anything or to anybody, other than a negative difference in bank accounts, and building Heritage USA (is that place still in existance? Google time!) Hardly a good comparison- try again.

Being well educated in not mutally exclusive to institutional learning! It also includes knowing how to represent yourself in a civil manner when discussing a heated issue. It also includes being a genuine lover of history and knowing that facts are based on the HUMAN factor. No one in history was ever perfect but the good that they created in society is what they should be revered for, not their personal life. I am sure you can think of many cases throughout history where this is the case! MOST great thinkers, artists, scientists and theologians certianly did not possess the most savory moral character! Take off your ignorant cap!

well said allifunn:clap_1: the human factor. I'm from Bham so I have always witnessed how many whites were a little too enthusiastic about discovering King's personal side - and using this information against anything and everything he stood for.

I'm not saying that 6thgen's statement are racist. but, knowing folks who spew forth statement much like his (who consider themselves to be highly intelligent, and therefore would not think of themselves as racist in any way) my guess is that he's one of the worst. Sorry to say I've seen it many many times in this life.

the racist part of you is pretty much a given, sorry. being well-read does not exempt you from this unfortunate state of being.

This is just MHO but as far as I am concerned
Conservatism = stale, stagnet, darkness, judgemental
Liberalism = change, growth, enlightenment, tolerance

:idontno: just how I feel...I am sure I'll catch some flak from this one.....:floor:

I think MLK is best remembered as an ideal, rather than for what he really was. The content of Mr. King’s moral character leaves much to be desired, but he did more for civil rights than anyone since Lincoln.

I won't disagree with your point because I'm not familiar with what King did behind closed doors, but your statement is small minded because you so casually discount Mohandas Gandhi, whose methods were followed by King.

A note to all - calling a fellow poster ignorant or racist is a personal attack, which is not allowed on this board. Do it again and you'll be banned. Please attack the issue, not the poster. Also I'll add, resorting to personal attacks simply reveals your inadequecies.
