Our fur baby

New posts
Hey everyone. Thanks for the kind words. I feel so sad and my husband and I both are beating ourselves up. We are wondering if he suffered some kind of brain damage due to the 104.4 fever he had today. We hate now that we didn't take him several days ago to get his sugar checked again feeling this would have been avoided had his sugar been checked several days ago. I was told the low sugar would make him have seizures and have fever. The vet stated that she felt since his sugar had gotten back to normal and he still had a seizure after that she determined it wasn't sugar related. But I found him around 11:30 having the seizure. Got to the emergency clinic with him around 6:15 tonight. Didn't leave there until 7:15. He actually stepped down out of the car himself and walked in. He didn't want to stay. After they took him back he started barking his head off. I had them bring him in the room where I was waiting and sat with him for about 10 to 15 minutes. He was wagging his tail and laying his head on my lap. Licking my hand. Seemed fairly perky. Am going to call and check on him before we go to bed. If he hasn't had another seizure overnight maybe it won't happen again. He has never ever had one before. Just wondering how long he had been under that bush. He seemed totally disoriented. Sapphire was that time when her sugar was low that time. But she never had a seizure. I'll keep everyone posted. Probably won't know much of anything else tonight.

do not beat yourself up lady! All 4 legged friends tolerate as much as they can...and then they can do no more. You had no way of knowing the extent of the problem...so stop beating yourself up. You have a great fur baby and one that loves you ...you have done all you can!

Good luck Lady D. For what it is worth, high fevers can sometimes trigger seizures. Also, in humans it is unlikely that a fever will cause 'brain damage' (whew, if I had a nickel for every time I gave that speech!), so this might apply to dogs as well. Best wishes.

I am very concerned now. I called and checked on him at 10:30. They checked his blood sugar around 7:30 to 8:00 I guess and I was told it showed 22. Someone's got a faulty glucose meter or something. That dog wouldn't be able to walk like he did when he was in that exam room with me at 7:00 p.m. if it were 22! His sugar at 4:00 was 96. He is on an IV Glucose drip at 50% supposedly. I read every bit of the instructions his vet gave them, including trying to get him to eat some food tonight. They have fed that dog nothing. That in itself would make his sugar low and I would think he would be in a coma. He is there for help, not to hasten his death. I am about to call them back as they were checking his sugar again at 11:00 and would increase the glucose drip if needed. Do they not realize that some food would make his sugar go up! Now I am really frustrated. :bang:

I'm so sorry, and I'll be thinking of you. You are a good pet owner, don't beat yourself up. Mo has had a good loving home with you.

I am very sorry you have to go through this. Making the decision is very hard, but more times than not, it is for the best. :(

Any updates this morning??

Yes, there are updates. We had to pick him up at the emergency clinic this morning between 7:00 and 7:30. They close and do not open back up until 6:00 every night and are open all night to cover for vets not being available. He is back at the regular vet. Still refusing food this morning, sugar was checked at the vet, it is at 84, seems a little perky. Is walking fairly good. Had no more seizures overnight at all. So we are not giving up on him yet. She feels no masses in his abdomen. Will let people know more throughout the day as I know anything. Thanks guys.
